Guilt is commonly reported by trauma survivors and has been linked to greater posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) severity (e.g., Bryan et al., 2015). As such, understanding how guilt impacts PTSD recovery has been of significant interest to clinicians and researchers. Indeed, there has been debate about whether prolonged exposure therapy (PE) is as effective for those with high guilt, with some suggesting that imaginal exposure to trauma memories is either unhelpful (e.g., Grunert, Weis, Smucker, & Christianson, 2007) or potentially iatrogenic (e.g., Pitman et al., 1991).

ISTSS, the leading global organization promoting the advancement and exchange of knowledge about severe stress and trauma, today released a briefing paper on the trauma of hate-based violence. A group of experts on the mental health of diverse populations that have experienced potential traumas associated with hate-based violence summarize the research that has been conducted in this area and provide recommendations for research, clinical practice and policy.

The International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) produced the first guidelines for the prevention and treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in 2000 (Foa et al., 2000) and updated these in 2009 (Foa et al., 2009). This paper describes the development of the recently published third version of the ISTSS Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of PTSD recommendations and position papers on complex PTSD in November 2018 (ISTSS, 2018).
