Howard Reich Honored with 2017 ISTSS Public Advocacy Award

CHICAGO, IL, November 10, 2017 – The winner of the 2017 ISTSS Public Advocacy Award is Howard Reich. The Public Advocacy Award is given for outstanding and fundamental contributions to advancing social understanding of trauma.

Mr. Reich has been the respected art critic for the Chicago Tribune for over 30 years. In 2003, he wrote about the deeply personal story of his mother, Sonia Reich, a Holocaust survivor, and her struggles with late-onset PTSD.  For over a year, Howard chronicled this in his Tribune story, “Prisoner of Her Past.”  Due to the overwhelming response from his readers, in 2009, Howard published his Tribune story into a moving memoir.  At the same time, Howard partnered with award-winning Kartemquin Films to produce a powerful documentary of the same name about Sonia’s story.  Now, Howard is working on his second documentary dealing with trauma entitled “Left-Handed Pianist.”

Through his outstanding heart-felt writings and films, Howard is able to humanize, create empathy, and highlight the resiliency of those living with trauma.  Howard’s films provide a platform for audiences --especially families and supporters of those living with trauma -- to have a shared experience that can be used as a springboard for conversation about trauma. Through his uniquely creative work, Howard continues to tirelessly introduce, advocate, and advance social understanding of trauma.

The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies is pleased to honor Howard Reich for advancing social understanding of trauma.

ISTSS is an international interdisciplinary professional organization that promotes advancement and exchange of knowledge about traumatic stress.
