ISTSS

March 31, 2015

Symposium: Estimating PTSD Trajectories was held on March 11 in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The meeting was part of the ISTSS Global Meetings Program, designed to share knowledge about traumatic stress studies to others worldwide and to highlight the work of ISTSS. In this case, promotion and publicity of the event by ISTSS attracted an international audience, including participants from China!

The meeting was organized by Rens van de Schoot, PhD, of Utrecht University, and included discussion of trajectory analysis in the context of PTSD development in Utrecht. In the opening presentation, ISTSS President, Miranda Olff, PhD, familiarized participants with the goals and strategic initiatives of ISTSS, including its Global Meetings program. Since the meeting was in being held in Europe, the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ESTSS) was also involved and published the meeting abstracts in its open access journal, the European Journal of Psychotraumatology.

Rens van de Schoot presented on the Latent Growth Mixture Model (LGMM), after which Isaac Galatzer-Levy, PhD (NYU), discussed where LGMMs are applied in social sciences and the insights they can provide. Finally, Sarah Depaoli, PhD (UC Merced), introduced the world of Bayesian statistics and its advantages related to LGMM. Note: Rens van de Schoot will also lead a discussion of Beysian statistics as a Master Methodologist at the ISTSS 31st Annual Meeting in New Orleans.

The international audience was comprised of masters students, PhD students, junior researchers and faculty staff members representing both research and clinical backgrounds. Several well-known international experts in the field of PTSD research were in attendance also, including Arieh Shalev, MD (NY Langone Medical Center), Brian Hall, PhD (University of Macau, China) and Richard Bryant, PhD (University of New South Wales).

Overall, the meeting was a great success!
